Toronto Island 20 km loop and going around

Toronto Island is an excellent location to inline skate provided that the chosen time is also excellent. During spring and summer time It is advisable to be at the island at 8 am on weekends while 7 am is the perfect time.

Skating until 10 / 10:30 am and then leave or leave around 12 pm has been the most enjoyable schedule so far.

We are planning some weekend summer sessions at the Toronto Island and the if the host is available, these sessions are predicted to happen Sunday mornings but may also happen on Saturdays. As for the time, the preference is as previously mentioned, earlier as possible being 8 am the preferred time to be at the island geared up and ready to roll.

The following is part or the plan:

  • Skate time
  • Social time (after the session)
  • End on a beach, working out the tan under some fresh morning sun while drowning in vitamin D
  • Anyone wanting to go for a dive on the beach, although we know it is hard, we advise to take the skates prior to the dive and should bring attire for such and a beach towel.
  • Take some snacks and beverages. You can store everything on the island lockers near the beach pier bridge and washrooms. (toonies and loonies needed)
  • Sessions will start early at 8 am or 9 am to avoid the crowds and we leave mid morning, mid day or when the individual decides to leave

Location

Characteristics

  • Route 1: 5.250 m from end to end.
  • Route 2: 5.250 m from end to end. 10.5 km loop total.
  • Route 3: 7.5 km from end to end with center island routes. 15 km total loop
  • Route 4: 10 km from end to end with center island routes. 20 km total loop but may go to 22 if going around the resident area.
  • Wide main road but narrow secondary trails
  • Pavement changes from okay to good and very good on some parts.
  • Public lighting not everywhere.

Time and speed

Moderate relaxed pace at an average of 14 km/h will allow the completion of the basic loop in 45 minutes.

The usual group session for 15 km at a pace around 15~16 km/h takes about 1h it is a conformable pace for the well established intermediate skater on 80 mm wheels.

As reference points:

  • 10.5 km route takes 25 minutes to complete at an average speed of 24km/h.
  • 15 km route takes 1 hour to complete at an average speed of 15 km/h
  • 20 km route takes 1 hour to complete at a speed of 20km/h
